Krems,
Austria
Venue for Austria
U21 v England U21, Friday 3 September 2004
A Brief Insight -
Situated in the
eastern part of the Wachau (Danube Valley) on the left bank of the Danube
lies the 1,000-year-old city of Krems in the heart of Austria's Wine growing
area, with a farmers market 3 times a week.
Having a population of some 23,000 it is more of a market town now
encompasses Stein and Mautern, once separate towns. Krems is an easygoing
peaceful place made up courtyards, old churches, and ancient houses and
still retains some of the original, now preserved town walls.
Getting There and Around
- A lot will depend on kick off time, still to be announced. If you are not
hiring a car to travel onward to Poland, the obvious choice is to take a
train from Wein Franz-Josefs Bahnhof for the hour long journey but the last
train back leaves Krems Station, known as "Krems an der Donau" at 21.01.
Use
the Die Bahn link to search for a full list of train times.
Car Hire - A full UK driving licence is
required. As in the UK, seat belts should be worn front and rear. Austria
has strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.25 milligrams of alcohol per
litre of blood. Speed limits are rigorously enforced and Radar traps are
frequent, with heavy on-the-spot fines issued.
If you rent a car outside
of Austria, you must purchase a 'Vinietta' at the border. This sticker is
also sold at most petrol stations near the borders with Slovakia and
Hungary. It costs around €8 but if you're caught on the road or parked
without one, you’ll be fined.
For those planning on driving onward to Poland, check before signing the rental
agreement that you can take the vehicle into Poland, as this is prohibited
by some firms due to the high incidence of car crime.
