England Legends will be looking to restore some national pride when they face the Germany Legends at Bramall Lane, Sheffield United on Thursday August 7th for a game in aid of the Redcross Chinese Earthquake appeal. Screened live on ITV4 from 7pm, England v Germany: The Legends Live pits squads from England, whose national team failed to make Euro 2008, and Germany, who reached its final, in a match to discover which nation’s Legends holds the upper hand. England v Germany: The Legends Live marks the second game in The Legends’ three-game summer schedule. On May 15th, the England Legends beat Scotland 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, thanks to goals from Stan Collymore and Steve Hodge and under the watchful eye of Legends Manager Peter Reid. In October, England will complete The Legends Series when facing Ireland. A formidable-looking Germany Legends squad already includes 1990 World Cup Winner Guido Buchwald, 1986 World Cup final midfielder Matthias Herget, 2002 World Cup final defenders Carsten Ramelow and Marko Rehmer, Spurs’ midfielder Steffen Freund, Bolton’s cult striker Fredi Bobic, former Bayern Munich defender Thomas Helmer, striker Olaf Marschall and midfielder Norbert Meier. Former Everton and Manchester City midfielder Reid will resume the England Manager’s helm for the Germany clash. On the task ahead, he commented: “The England Legends are a completely different team to the one that lost to Germany in 2006 and we’ll show that on August 7th. Since the defeat, we’ve comfortably beaten a Rest of the World team and Scotland but we know the true test will come against Mattheus, Sammer, Freund and the likes. We want to build on our recent successes and establish England as Europe’s top Legends nation.” Reid added: “The Sheffield crowd will also play a crucial part. This is the only chance an England football team will get to put one over Germany this summer so we’ll need every red-blooded English man and woman at Bramall Lane on August 7th to cheer us on to victory.” England Legend Paul Merson signs up for Germany clash - England Legends Manager Peter Reid has included ex-Arsenal, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and Walsall midfielder Paul Merson in his England Legends squad. Merson joins former Manchester United and England skipper Bryan Robson, Lee Sharpe, Liverpool and England winger John Barnes ex-Liverpool striker Stan Collymore and Sheffield Legends Brian Deane and Des Walker, amongst Reid’s 16-man number to face the Germany Legends live on ITV4. England Legends Manager Peter Reid enthused: “Merson was absolutely brilliant against Scotland when we beat them 2-0 at Southampton in May. He still has that fantastic ability to pick out a pass, to make opportunities out of nothing. When people talk about England players not having the technical ability of the foreign players coming in, they only need to look at Merse and they have to take their words back. He’s well worth watching and for any young kids coming along to see England v Germany, they’ll get a masterclass in control, passing and vision. We’ll need all that and more to beat Germany but I’m delighted to have Merse in my squad.” Bryan Robson noted: “Legends football gets more competitive and professional with each passing year. I watched the games at Reading, Milton Keynes and Southampton and they were both great games, full of excitement and goals. It was also worth noting that the grounds were packed full of families enjoying a night out together and cheering England on in a competitive match played in exactly the right spirit.” On Sharpe’s addition, England Legends Manager Peter Reid enthused: “Sharpey wasn’t available to me against Scotland, so he comes in and really strengthens my squad. Lee is still a very talented player who can get up and down the pitch so he’s going to be crucial against Germany. It’s great news for England supporters that Lee is on board.” Sharpe added: “I can’t wait to get out there and play against Germany. I couldn’t make the Scotland game because of other media commitments but I’ve heard from a couple of the lads that England played some great football. I hope that continues against Germany and that we give England supporters something to sing and shout on about next month.” Charity The game will be played in aid of the Redcross Chinese Earthquake appeal. Sheffield United Chairman Kevin McCabe confirmed: “We are proud to host this event on behalf of the city and help raise funds for the victims of the earthquake appeal in Sichuan province where our club the Chengdu Blades are based.”
